Join the National Workforce Nutrition Alliance
Ethiopia’s economy is powered by sectors such as manufacturing, textiles, agriculture, and agribusiness, all of which depend on a healthy and productive workforce. Yet the country reported that the average output per worker declined from a peak of 8.9 percent in 2010 to less than 5 percent by 2020, with Ethiopia’s productivity score remaining below the African average (African Transformation Index 2023).
While many factors contribute to productivity outcomes, worker health and wellbeing remain fundamental. Employers continue to face challenges related to absenteeism, illness, workforce turnover, and reduced productivity, which can be influenced by workers’ nutritional wellbeing and access to healthy diets.
Workers who have access to healthier diets are more likely to be productive, energetic, engaged, and resilient. Better nutrition can contribute to improved worker wellbeing, reduced illness-related absences, enhanced morale, and stronger business performance. Good nutrition is both beneficial to health and businesses.
Recognising the important role employers can play in addressing these challenges, given that a third of our adult lives is spent at work, the Ministry of Health (MoH), the SUN Business Network (SBN), and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) Ethiopia established the National Workforce Nutrition Alliance in March, 2024. The Alliance brings together employers, government institutions, development partners, civil society organisations, and academia and provide technical support to advance healthier diets and better nutrition for workers across Ethiopia. Today, the Alliance serves as a platform for learning, collaboration, and action, helping organisations strengthen worker wellbeing while contributing to improved productivity, business performance, and national development.
